Yes, Udom has failed in Car assembly and LED plants" - Enoidem, as Akwa Ibom State indigenes take him to task.
In apparent response to the outcry by well meaning Akwa Ibom citizens on the inability of the Udom led government to transit from ground breaking to visible action on several projects across the state, Barr. Emmanuel Enoidem has admitted failure of the Udom administration.
Speaking at an event recently in the State, on gov Udom's tenure so far, the former Commissioner for Commerce and Industry alleged that the unpredictable state of foreign exchange in the country made it impothe proposed Vehicle assembly & LED plants in the state.
While alluding to the instability of the foreign exchange as a deterrent, Barr. Enoidem could not however explain why it is that the instability of forex only seemed to affect certain proposed industries while leaving out others.
“At the time we went to Isreal and met with the vehicle manufacturers, exchange rate was about 200 a dollar but this jumped shortly to N400
There is no foreign investor that will come to Nigeria because of volatile exchange rate.
We went to Romania to bring manufacturers of Low Energy Display (LED) electric bulbs, the investors had to stay back because of foreign exchange instability“ Enoidem alleged.
Prominent Akwa Ibom sons and daughters have however taken a swipe at Enoidem’s position, holding that it was a mere face saving measure aimed at explaining lack of planning and incompetence.
“Enoidem failed to tell us how much the state government had already invested in the project and wether this explanation is also common to other projects which had gone through ground breaking but nowhere to be seen. Is that also true of the coconut refinery or the hatchery project?” Chief Ikpe Essien, trader and contractor asked.
ssien, trader and contractor asked.
According to Mrs Angela Enobong, “Akwa Ibom should expect more of such admissions as we move closer and closer to D day. It is obvious that the Udom administration had no clue and did not do any feasibility study on these projects. For a financial expert like Udom to exhibit such level of low planning tells a lot about his capacity” she said.
Attempts to get Enoidem to speak further on the issues raised has so far proved abortive.
It would be recalled that gov Udom Emmanuel had in July 2015 laid the foundation stone for the construction of the vehicle assembly plant in the Itu local government area of Akwa Ibom state. At the time, the Udom government had informed the people that the plant was in conjunction with MIMSHAC Merkavim Transportation Technologies, an Israeli firm.
Akwa Ibom people were told that the assembly plant had components of manpower development, utility vehicles, luxury buses, building of a training school, ambulances and fire trucks.
